Some weddings feel beautiful.
Some weddings feel fun.
And some feel like you’ve stepped into something that’s been growing for a long time.
This one felt like all of the above.
Ben and Kay have been together for over ten years and you can tell. Not in a loud, over-the-top way, but in the quiet, easy way they move around each other. It’s playful, comfortable and completely unforced.
The whole day carried that same energy.
Nothing felt rushed or performative.
It just felt like them.
Getting Ready; Calm, Excited and a Little Bit Surreal
The morning started with Kay at the hotel, surrounded by her people.
There’s always this mix of energy during getting ready; a little bit of excitement, a few deep breaths and those small in-between moments (those ones are my favourite).
Ben had secretly arranged a gift for Kay, along with handwritten letters for each of the girls that morning. At the same time, Kay had her own surprise waiting for him; a boudoir album she and I had created together, delivered through his groomsmen.
By the time everything was opened, there wasn’t a dry eye in the room (mine included). It felt like such a beautiful way to start the day.
My associate photographer was with Ben, getting ready with his groomsmen, which meant we were able to tell both sides of the story as the day unfolded.
And then, before you know it, everyone is dressed and it’s time to go.

A Ceremony That Felt Grounded and Full of Joy
Their ceremony took place just outside of Cloverdale Community League here in Edmonton, right in the open field, bordering the ski hill.
Simple, intentional and surrounded by the warmest fall tones. The weather was pretty perfectly fall (my absolute favourite): sunny skies with a slight breeze.
They chose to include a ring warming as part of their ceremony, passing their rings through the hands of their closest family and friends. Each person held them for a moment, adding their own quiet blessing before they returned to Ben and Kay.
The focus stayed exactly where it should have been; on them, on their people and on the commitment they were making after all these years together. It felt incredibly intentional and full of love.
And when they walked back down the aisle…
Just pure happiness.

A Wedding Party That Felt Like Family
After the ceremony, we made our way to Henrietta Muir Edwards Park for wedding party photos.
This part of the day was such a good reflection of who they are.
A mix of close friends, lots of laughter and a couple of really special additions; Kay’s sister as a junior bridesmaid and her brother as a junior groomsman.
Right when we got there, I whipped out my secret weapon: music. Within minutes, everyone was dancing and having an awesome time. It felt relaxed, playful and completely natural.
No one was trying too hard. Everyone just showed up as themselves.
It made for natural, joy-filled images!

Time to Just Be Together
Once the wedding party headed back, we had some time with just Ben and Kay.
This part felt like a relaxing breath.
No audience. No expectations. Just the two of them, finally having a second to exist in the middle of their own day.
They were so easy together. Playful, a little bit silly at times, but also really grounded. Content. Happy.
I was really only there to gently guide; they did the rest. They way they move together and read each other is just…incredible. Their love story is unique and so, so special.

The Colours (Because They Deserve Their Own Moment)
I have to talk about the colour palette for a second because it was so well done.
The bridesmaids wore this rich, deep tone that sat somewhere between red and burnt orange, and it worked beautifully with the season.
The florals pulled everything together; warm, textured and full without feeling heavy.
It all felt cohesive, classic and elegant.

A Reception Full of Energy (and One Very Memorable Surprise)
Back at the hall, everything carried on with that same warm, welcoming energy.
The food was incredible. The speeches were meaningful without dragging on. The kind of evening where people are fully present and actually enjoying themselves.
During speeches, one of my favourite moments of the whole day unfolded; a surprise flash mob organized by Kay’s family.
It started with a bit of confusion, turned into laughter, and within seconds, the whole room was completely in it.
I love it when families can pull off huge surprises like this one; it adds this amazing personal touch to a wedding day.
Kay and Ben skipped the traditional wedding cake and went with ice cream instead; their favourite.
After sharing a few bites together, guests were invited to build their own, with all the toppings you could think of. Such a fun, personal touch, I loved it.
Then the dance floor opened and it stayed packed all night!
We’re talking 2000s and early 2010s bangers, people fully committing, head banging with zero hesitation.
I’ll never forget the incredible energy in this room! I drove the entire way home with a massive smile on my face.

Why Did This One Mean So Much?
I’ve had the chance to photograph Ben and Kay before, and I also knew some of their extended family going into the day, which made everything feel incredibly welcoming and comfortable from the start.
But more than that, there’s just something about their relationship that’s so easy to love. The way they are together; natural, playful, and completely themselves; it carried into every part of their day.
Being able to witness and support not just their wedding, but their marriage and the life they’re building together feels like a genuine gift.
When it came time to put their gallery together, I took my time, because days like this deserve that kind of care.
